Courses
Regardless of their desired areas of specialization all students in SCIAD devote the first year to the programme getting introduced to a variety of courses from all the arts areas. The only exception is the Certificate course where students undertake a selected number of courses concisely through a one year period.
Because Art and Design share a common foundation of skills and sensibilities, exposure to each area is important for a comprehensive understanding of one's chosen field. Here the students are introduced to the fundamentals of visual perception and organization through a variety of courses in drawing two and three dimensional media. Designed to develop students' technical and communication skills, expand their creative thinking and further their understanding of history and culture. The core programmes must be completed by all SCIAD candidates before graduating.

Many courses here are organized to deal with the recognized periods of African Art, Western Art and some involve in particular cultures especially African. But many will cut across the boundaries to follow a governing idea such as philosophies of Art or Art and society. Although a close study of visual form is given an emphasis appropriate to SCIAD, student and instructors are encouraged to inquire into the broader cultural implications of the Arts and Artists that have occurred through Ancient and modern times. |
It involves glass, pottery, figure modeling, Wood and stone carving, Welding, Plaster, Foundry, Clean room (light machines), Plastics, Optics, Fabrication.
The Sculpture programme is concerned with building the student's experiences and knowledge in materials and concepts. The most realistic learning situations are firsthand experience and observation of a professional art work. To that end the students work on their sculpture in the department and the operation of the foundry, welding and other facilities is taught by good professionals.
The students' course of study is in large part self-determined through a system of electives and independent work.
To supplement the offerings of the faculty, the students are taken to good sculpture exhibitions and they are taken also to study trips to industries and art school exhibitions in Universities around.
The ceramics programme is structured to provide the student with a thorough understanding of clay as a creative medium.
The students get to forming methods and gain an understanding of the technology of materials and Kilns. Students are provided with an opportunity to become creative artist - potters, designers and teachers. |
This course asserts the Faculty's belief in the importance of draughtsmanship and the value of drawing from landscape, natural or manufactured objects, imagination and the human figure as well as bird and animal figures. The faculty work as a team to offer a broad understanding of the many aspects of drawing. |
Here the specific disciplines of typographic workshop and printing processes are made available. Thus Graphic design here is not limited to visual communication by the printed sheet. It will include new photographic techniques and improved audio visual methods. |
The course of Apparel Design educates its students to meet the highest requirements of the fashion industry on every level of production to meet, predict and lead the rhythm of quick popularity and sudden obsolescence. |
Our students deal mainly in Printing concerned with the embellishment of a fabric which Includes Painting, Photography, silkscreen printing, block printing, stencil printing and dyed processes in both batik and tie dye. |
The course has a very fascinating aspect from any stand point; the amazing diversity of its artistic and everyday applications. The camera as a tool and manipulation of photographic effects in design areas of printing processes, Desktop Publishing, Graphic Design and Communication Skills are well applied. |
The programme here goes beyond preparing to read computer information systems and other specialized computer applications. Participants learn system analysis and design, management of computer systems, computer architecture, computer feeding and finally production of personal design and prints. Thus the student is moved to think experimentally and unpredictably in his search for the best patterns to produce the most telling print. |
Communications goes beyond the limits of everyday use of words to a broad concern with the range of communication that is based on intuition. The student is everyday involved in the essential problems of translating visuals into expression using the right vocabulary, one has to have the skills of research. Here the student explores the sciences, social sciences and philosophy. So the student communicates ideas by verbal graphic, three dimensional and audio - visual media. |
The Courses here give students knowledge and basic skills on entrepreneurship and other good financial management and business practices. As commercial artists they get basics on business ethics, Sales Force Management, Fundamentals of Accounting and Information Technology. |
A research programme with a well structured guideline is in place. It digs the student into the essential bibliography, pushes the student to do experimental and statistical methods as they are applied to visual statements |
Here the candidates explore the back ground of the 20th century in the field of magazines, books, comics, animations and fashion illustrations, poster and political cartoons. |
