Welcome word by the Vice Chancellor

You are warmly welcome to the Nkumba University website. Nkumba University is unique in terms of its history, Vision and Mission. The Vision of the University is: “To be a center of Academic and Professional excellence.”

Our mission is, “To provide an environment that enables the cultivation of competence, confidence, creativity and character in the academic, professional and social interactions.” Embracing these values – that is, the 4Cs – is credited to Prof. William Senteza Kajubi, the inaugural Vice Chancellor of the University.

Whether you are Alumni, a prospective or current student, a guardian or sponsor of current student(s), or a member of the community within or outside Uganda, we commend to you our values and endeavors aimed at stimulating the spirit of enterprise and entrepreneurship and noteworthy contribution to society.

No one could have possibly imagined half a century ago that a humble kindergarten whose roof was blown off in a night storm would today stand as an eminent University.Yet Nkumba University stands as one of the largest private universities in East Africa, enrolling an enviable number of students from the entire region. The total student population today stands at 7000, and each year nearly 1000 matriculate with certificates and diplomas, degrees as well as postgraduate qualifications.

The University currently boasts of six Schools: School of Business Administration; School of Education, Humanities and Sciences; School of Law and Institute of Criminal Justice; the School of Industrial, Commercial Art and Design; and then the School of Hospitality and Environment Sciences. The School of Law is the only one of its kind in the region offering programmes leading to the award of Bachelor of Criminal Justice as well as Diplomas in Criminal Justice. These are new programmes suitable for members of the public as well as the Armed Forces such as the Police, Prisons and the Army.

The School of Hospitality and Environment Sciences is in the final stages of evolution into the School of Sciences to additionally teach Applied Sciences such as Biological and Health sciences, which is in line with government efforts to popularize Science and Technology Innovation (STI). In the course of each academic year, the University sets aside a research fund to facilitate at least 10 research projects from the six Schools of the University. Not only is research budgeted for each year, the University continues to seek other research sponsors. The natural research programme under the Presidential Initiative for Malaria Research is housed at the School of Hospitality and Environment Sciences.
Nkumba University is now recognized not only for supporting human health sciences, including related research; in regard to its environmentally friendly stance, it has embarked upon the forestation of its one hundred hectare farmland near Entebbe town.

Nkumba University through the School of Social Sciences has established a Women’s Health Centre, which is a community outreach programme offering reproductive health services for mothers and children. The outreach programme additionally operates, through its business unit, a micro-finance loan scheme with over 500 beneficiaries in Wakiso District. The School of Social Sciences is now offering the Diploma in HIV/AIDS Education and Management, which is conducted in collaboration with The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) Uganda. In 2002 Nkumba University was indeed the first higher institution of learning in the great lakes region to develop an institutional HIV/AIDS policy to guide and regulate its relationship with staff, students and the community.

The School of Social Sciences has since 2008 successfully conducted the Uganda Parliamentary Research Internship Programme in collaboration with the State University of New York (SUNY) and USAID.

However, all these notable achievements by the University are a far cry from its humble beginnings.

It began as a kindergarten on February 6, 1952 with just twelve pupils in the compound of a local chief. A year earlier, one Ssalongo Erisa Kintu had mooted the idea of a kindergarten because he was concerned by the inability of children of tender age footing distances of seven miles from Abayita-Ababiri to attend either Chadwick Primary School in Entebbe Town or Kisubi Primary School.

In his book, Nkumba University’s Evolution and Development, Prince Besueri Mulondo states: “In 1955 the school had grown to a full primary school.”

By the late 1960s, having surmounted significant financial and other challenges, the school had transformed and established as Nkumba Secondary School.

In 1969, the secondary school embraced vocational training, starting with the introduction of secretarial studies to the school curriculum. The School name was then changed to Nkumba Secondary Modern. The addition of accounting courses a little later saw the institution evolve into Nkumba College of Commerce and Advanced Studies. The College of Commerce based its academic offers on the East African Examinations for Business Studies. These examinations would enable the graduates to compete for jobs anywhere in East Africa.

In 1994, through the prodigious and highly effective efforts of Prof. William Senteza Kajubi, Nkumba College of Commerce and Secretarial Studies evolved into Nkumba University. The legacy of Prof. Kajubi as the inaugural Vice Chancellor of Nkumba University is highly treasured and cherished by the University. The University received its Charter in 2006. The Charter enshrines the vision, mission as well as the mandate of the University as a body corporate.

The University presently employs over 300 staff in a cross-section of fields, and is keen on quality assurance. In May 2010, following the retirement of the previous University Secretary, another seasoned administrator, Mrs. Mary G. Katusabe-Ssemwezi, was signed up to head a strengthened team of administrative staff.

The University has more than academics to show off. The University sports team has performed outstandingly since 1994. Moreover, each year the University organizes an international students’ day in which Ugandan and international students exhibit the richness of their cultural backgrounds.
