School Vision:

To promote the development of Human Resources
through holistic scholarship.

School Mission:

The School seeks to provide a morally, socially and intellectually oriented excellence that gives opportunity to those who seek good governance and sustainable development.

The School of Social Sciences (SOSS) is one of the six Schools of Nkumba University. It was carved out of the School of Education, Humanities and Social Sciences in 2005 with the aim of fully harnessing its programmes into community-based development activities for the transformation of lives in its outreach initiatives.

The School offers both Post-graduate and Under-graduate programmes in the fields of Development and Community Studies as well as Public Administration and Political studies.

The two Departments of the School – that is, Department of Development and Community Studies and then the Department of Public Administration and Political Studies – are coordinated by the Dean, Mr. George Mugisha Barenzi. The School has a pool of nearly two-dozen highly qualified staff with expertise and experience in the relevant disciplines to cater for the needs of over 1000 students enrolled for the School programmes.

In addition to the two departments, SOSS operates the Nkumba Women’s Health Centre. The Centre is a community outreach programme with the following units: Health and Counseling Unit, which offers health services for mothers and children; Nursery and Day Care Unit; and, the Business Unit, which offers training in vocational and small scale enterprises development.

SOSS is also posed to embark upon distinctive peace, security and conflict studies. The School offers a Diploma in HIV/AIDS Education and Management, and the studies are conducted in collaboration with The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) in Uganda. The School has engaged in a number of other projects including the Human Rights Education Project, Women and Child Care Projects as well as the Parliamentary Research and Internship Programme. The latter programme has been done in collaboration with USAID and the State University of New York (SUNY).

SOSS inclines to meet the convenience of students by running Day, Evening and Weekend sessions for the greater number of its programmes. Post-graduate studies are conducted on weekends only.

The School of Social Sciences has a handbook as well as a strategic plan for the years 2007 – 2012. Additionally, SOSS has published Guidelines for Research proposal and Dissertation/Thesis Writing, Submission and Assessment. The three booklets are accessible to current students and prospective students.
